Asbestos Abatement FAQs

What is asbestos abatement?

Asbestos abatement is the certified process of identifying, removing, and safely disposing of asbestos containing materials before demolition or renovation. Melching performs full service asbestos abatement using licensed crews, negative air containment, and strict MIOSHA and EPA compliant procedures.

How do I know if my building contains asbestos?

Asbestos can be found in insulation, pipe wrap, floor tile, ceiling materials, adhesives, roofing, and mechanical systems in many buildings constructed before the 1980s. Melching performs asbestos inspections and sampling to confirm where asbestos is present and how it must be removed.

What is the difference between friable and non friable asbestos?

Friable asbestos crumbles easily and becomes airborne, making it more hazardous. Non friable asbestos is bonded in materials like floor tile or siding. Both require certified removal, but friable asbestos demands stricter containment and air controls.

Do you provide asbestos surveys before demolition?

Yes. Melching performs full asbestos surveys and sampling as part of pre demolition planning. This ensures all regulated materials are identified and removed before demolition begins.

How does Melching ensure safe asbestos removal?

We use negative air containment, HEPA filtration, wet methods, sealed work areas, PPE, and continuous air monitoring. All work follows MIOSHA Part 602 and federal 29 CFR 1926.1101 standards.

Are your crews certified to remove asbestos?

Yes. Melching’s abatement workers and supervisors are state licensed and 40 Hour HAZWOPER trained. Our certifications are supported by annual MIOSHA CET refresher training.

Can Melching coordinate asbestos abatement and demolition together?

Absolutely. Because Melching self performs both environmental and demolition work, we coordinate abatement and demolition schedules in house. This reduces delays, limits change orders, and keeps your project moving efficiently.

What happens to asbestos waste after removal?

All asbestos containing materials are double bagged or wrapped, labeled, documented, and transported to licensed disposal facilities. Waste manifests and chain of custody documents are provided at project closeout.

Does asbestos abatement delay a project?

When managed correctly, abatement shortens the project timeline by removing hazards early and eliminating compliance issues later. Our integrated teams help minimize downtime and keep demolition sequencing on track.

Do you work in operating or occupied facilities?

Yes. Melching performs asbestos abatement in active hospitals, schools, manufacturing plants, and commercial buildings. We use containment systems and negative air pressure to keep operations safe and uninterrupted.
