Institutional Asbestos Abatement and Structural Demolition

Institutional Asbestos Abatement and Structural Demolition

Location: Muskegon, Michigan

Melching completed phased asbestos abatement and demolition of the former Muskegon General Hospital campus, a multi-addition medical facility originally constructed in the 1950s. The approximately 300,000-square-foot, multi-story structure consisted of a five-story patient tower with a penthouse from the 1950s, a 1970s emergency room addition, and a 1990s OB addition. The project was carefully sequenced by building segment to support redevelopment planning while safely managing extensive asbestos-containing materials throughout the facility.

What We Delivered

  • Phased demolition of a multi-generation hospital complex by building segment

  • 1990s addition demolished first to open early work areas

  • 1970s emergency room section demolished following asbestos abatement

  • 1950s patient tower demolished last using high-reach demolition methods

  • Full interior hazardous material removal prior to structural demolition

  • Phased strategy allowed early turnover of cleared areas while abatement teams continued work in remaining sections

  • Material recovery and recycling incorporated throughout the project

  • Steel recovery including red iron and shred steel

  • Copper salvage and concrete recycling performed on site

  • Regulated disposal of asbestos-containing materials

Equipment & Capabilities

  • 550-class high-reach excavator used for multi-story tower demolition
  • Multiple 490 and 480 class excavators for structural demolition and material handling
  • Concrete processing and recycling equipment used on site
  • Full in-house abatement and demolition crews
  • Tight coordination between abatement, demolition, and recycling operations

Results

  • Zero injuries throughout the project

  • Full compliance with containment and perimeter air monitoring requirements

  • Successful management of unforeseen asbestos-containing materials discovered during demolition

  • Third-party inspection and regulatory oversight maintained throughout the project

  • Universal waste safely removed including lighting, mercury devices, fire extinguishers, and chemicals

The Bottom Line:

The complex hospital demolition was completed safely and efficiently while managing extensive asbestos abatement and strict environmental controls. Melching achieved high levels of material recovery and recycling throughout the project, ultimately delivering the site shovel-ready for future redevelopment.
